The Four Ages of French Art

These frescoes were painted between 1929 and 1930 by Robert La Montagne Saint-Hubert, assisted by his pupils Ethel Wallace and James Newell. Robert La Montagne Saint-Hubert (1887-1950) was a Franco-American decorative painter and fresco artist. The six frescoes were rediscovered in 1994. The large-scale frescoes Le Chant d’Orphée and Les Archers symbolise the arts and sports available to residents. The other four frescoes, which are smaller in size, refer to four key periods in the history of French art (the Romanesque period, the Mystical period, the Renaissance and the Classical period, through the evocation of figures such as François 1er and Voltaire. Each fresco has the same composition, with one or more groups of characters in the foreground, and a monument or work symbolising its era in the background (a tapestry, Notre Dame de Paris, the Château de Chambord, the Château de Versailles). The Grand Salon of the Fondation des Etats-Unis, built by architect Pierre Leprince Ringuet, and its frescoes were listed as Monuments Historiques in September 2009.
