A residence for researchers

The Fondation Victor Lyon, requalified and inaugurated on the 31st of January 2018 in the presence of Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris, Faten Hidri, Vice President of the regional council of Île-de-France, charged with higher education and research and Jean-Marc Sauvé, President of the Fondation nationale Cité internationale universitaire de Paris, honorary Vice President of the state council. This important renovation, led by the Régie immobilière of the city of Paris, allowed for the creation of rooms adapted to international researchers.

Attracting international researchers

Within the context of growing international competition, welcoming high-level international researchers constitutes a major issue. The renovation of the Fondation Victor Lyon was born from the shared desire between the Île-de-France region, the city of Paris and the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris to increase the international influence of French research and higher education by offering accommodation that meets international standards for mobile researchers. The house was entirely requalified by the Régie immobilière of the City of Paris (RIVP) thanks to the financial support from the Île-de-France region and the city of Paris.

A renovated and reorganised building

Inaugurated in 1950, this house was constructed by the architect Lucien Bechmann and has 109 student rooms. Today it is a para-hotel residence that welcomes international researchers and their families in 39 apartments ranging from studios to 5-room apartments. The house was the object of a complete renovation carried out by aasb, an architecture agency, and designed by Suzel Brout and RRC architects Paul Ravaux for the execution. The concrete structure and stone and brick façades were renovated and all of the joinery has been changed to respond to acoustic and thermal criteria in the city of Paris’s climate plan. The apartments are furnished with birch panels that were used to make a portion of the furniture. The bathroom and the kitchen are hidden behind sliding doors and walls.

Paris, like the Cité internationale, has an innovation function, which is to capture the world of tomorrow without denying the world of yesterday. In order to attract international talent they offer the possibility of coming with your family and that is exactly what the Fondation Victor Lyon offers.

Everything is unified and integrated with birch panels to make the space appear calmer and larger in both the spirit of Scandinavia and Japan.

Preserving history

All of the elements that make up the house’s history have been preserved, such as the painting by Jean Dries in the lounge.

Responding to researchers’ needs

Since the start of the 2017 school year the residence has welcomed researchers and their families, notably from the Institut d’études Avancées de Paris. Like every house on campus, common areas promote exchanges.

A new conference room

An extension to the south houses a contemporary 120-seat auditorium. In the evening, its opalescent windows transform the room into a lantern that lets it be seen throughout the campus.
