1925–2025: a century of sharing and fraternity

Created in 1925 in a context shaped by the aftermath of the First World War, the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris was born of a humanist vision. Its founders sought to show that living together in diversity was not only possible, but essential to building a world of lasting peace. For a century, the Cité internationale has embodied a concrete utopia that has preserved its spirit of openness and resilience, while continuing to inspire the future. It stands as a tangible response to the fractures of our world.

Centenary ambitions

Promoting our founding values

In the face of contemporary challenges—climate crisis, geopolitical tensions, the dismantling of multilateralism, and attacks on the rule of law—the centenary was meant to reaffirm that our commitments to peace, solidarity, and intercultural dialogue remain as relevant and necessary as ever.

Showcasing a unique model of collective life

Through a diverse program open to all, the Cité internationale aimed to highlight to the widest possible audience its essential role in welcoming the youth of the world and its one-of-a-kind model of communal living.

Looking towards the future
For a century, the Cité internationale has shown that a humanist vision can not only withstand the test of time but also inspire new generations. This centenary was intended not as a mere commemoration, but as a promise to continue dreaming and inspiring the world.

Looking towards the future

For a century, the Cité internationale has shown that a humanist vision can not only withstand the test of time but also inspire new generations. This centenary was intended not as a mere commemoration, but as a promise to continue dreaming and inspiring the world.

A Multidisciplinary program

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the Cité internationale offered a rich and varied program from March to December 2025, reflecting the campus’s diverse identity and its mission of openness and knowledge sharing. The program highlighted its commitments to peace, the preservation of its architectural heritage, the dissemination of knowledge, and the promotion of artistic creation. Concerts, digital arts, performances, exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, and guided tours all served to remind audiences that the Cité internationale is a unique space for knowledge exchange and innovation.

Peace and intercultural dialogue

The raison d’être of the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris is deeply rooted in the ideal of peace. The centenary was an opportunity to reaffirm the belief that human, intellectual, and cultural encounters, transcending borders, can help ensure lasting peace. Through conferences, artistic performances, and awareness initiatives, the program highlighted the power of dialogue and mutual understanding among peoples.

Heritage and architecture

The Cité internationale boasts exceptional architectural, artistic, and landscaped heritage. It has long served as a source of inspiration for architects and artists from around the world. The centenary showcased the richness of this heritage through exhibitions, guided tours, and symposia exploring its evolution, modernization, and attention to environmental issues.

Knowledge and learning

As a think tank and hub for knowledge sharing, the Cité internationale is a space for debate where solutions to contemporary global challenges are explored and discussed. Conferences, academic debates, and scientific symposia illustrated its central role in the transmission of knowledge and international cooperation.

Arts and creation

A unique cultural player in Paris, the Cité internationale provides an environment conducive to artistic creation and expression. It serves as a welcoming space for international artists in exile or seeking inspiration. The centenary celebrated the diversity of artistic expression, highlighting the campus’s universal dimension.

It is about the Cité making its contribution tomorrow—modest, certainly, but as useful as possible—to the building of a shared world grounded in the humanist principles on which it was founded.”

Jean-Marc Sauvé, president of the national foundation of the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris

A declaration to say who we are and who we aspire to be

At the close of its centenary, the Cité internationale presented a Declaration affirming a shared vision and ambition for the future. This Declaration is the result of a collective effort involving house directors, residents, alumni, staff, and partners. It expresses a strong conviction: in a world marked by tensions and retreat, the Cité internationale remains a unique place where intercultural dialogue, the exchange of knowledge, and the building of a common future are put into practice.
