PATRONAGE AT THE CITÉ INTERNATIONALE
The Cité Internationale has always drawn on the generous support of key private donors such as Emile Deutsch de la Meurthe and John Rockefeller Jr.
The Cité Internationale has now reached a turning point and is on the verge of launching a wide-ranging development campaign to renovate and enhance its architectural heritage, pursue intellectual and cultural projects and offer new scholarships. Why not support to this new drive?

In 1936, John D Rockefeller Jr chose to finance the project to build a Maison Internationale (International House) at the Cité Internationale, designed to host facilities essential to students’ community life. These included a university restaurant, library and... theatre. Designed by the architect J F Larson, the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale (which at the time featured a single auditorium) was opened in 1936. A number of professional companies began performing on its stage the following year.
After pushing the boundaries of theatrical expression (with performances by the likes of Jérôme Savary, Antoine Vitez and Peter Brook), the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale began a campaign to promote contemporary practices in performing arts (theatre and dance), with a focus on the most inventive style and content (repertoire, authors, movement, puppets, visual theatre and dance theatre). The theatre is now a landmark on the artistic scene, both in Paris and nationwide.
The theatre steadily expanded over the years. By the time the year 2000 came around, the increase in the number of visitors and changes in artistic expression had brought the need for a complete overhaul. The project was awarded to architects Xavier Fabre, Vincent Speller and Philippe Pumain, who designed a new theatre, comprising three auditoriums, two of which were positioned one above the other: La Coupole, La Galerie and La Resserre. While very different, the three created a complementary whole, with the audience able to move from one to another with ease. The new layout was opened to the public in 2004.
