The French health system includes compulsory basic health insurance (Social Security) and additional health coverage for those who want it.
When enrolling in an institute of higher education, it is compulsory to join and pay for the student Social Security scheme. In this way, you are entitled to the reimbursement of medical costs in the event of illness or maternity at any time during your academic year.
Depending on your situation, nationality, age, whether employed or not, you will have to pay into a specific fund. Prior to taking any steps, find out which fund corresponds to your particular situation by emailing baem@ciup.fr. You will receive a personalised answer.

Social Security sets the standard fees (called ”tarifs conventionnés”). Health costs are partially reimbursed by Social Security (between 35 and 70% of the standard fee). It is for this reason that additional coverage, offered by student mutual funds, although optional, is often essential.
