WELCOME STUDENTS, RESEARCHERS AND FOREIGN ARTISTS IN MOBILITY

YOU'RE A RESEARCHER

VISA AND RESIDENT PERMIT

The rules governing visas and resident permits vary depending on your country of origin. Find out about the procedure that concerns you depending on your situation.

You are a national of a Member State of the European Union (except Bulgaria and Romania), of the European Economic Space, Monaco, Andorra or the Swiss Confederation

You do not need a visa or a resident permit to stay in France.

You are a Bulgarian or Romanian national

Your tertiary qualification equivalent to at least five years’ post-secondary education has been validated in France

In this case, the transitory period does not apply to you so you can enter, live and work in France without necessarily having to apply for any authorisation.

Your tertiary qualification equivalent to at least five years’ post-secondary education was not awarded in France

In this case, like all European nationals, you may enter France without a visa providing you meet sufficient conditions to cover your stay (resources, health coverage, etc.) that can be easily met by presenting an employment contract or a scholarship certificate.

You will be employed in France

In this case, it is preferable that your future employer apply for a work permit on your behalf prior to your arrival. The application for this permit must be submitted by your host laboratory prior to your arrival to the relevant Direction Départementale du Travail, de l’Emploi et de la Formation Professionnelle (DDTEFP) (Local Department of Labour, Employment and Vocational Training). This procedure takes around one month and is essential for ensuring a smooth start to your research activity and payment of your salary.

If your laboratory has failed to request a work permit, submit an application for a work permit to the DDETFP of your place of residence.

After arriving in France, you must apply for a resident permit within two months of your arrival. You can only apply for a resident permit once the work permit has been issued.

You come from another country

Convention d’accueil

You must apply for a Convention d’accueil from your host research institute in France. This official document is issued by the Préfecture to research organisations. It must be signed by the authorised person in your research laboratory. It will enable you to obtain a visa scientifique (scientific visa).

Did you know?
On 1 June 2009, a new type of visa, called visa long séjour valant titre de séjour or VLSTS (long-term resident visa valid for use as a resident permit) was introduced in France. It is valid for up to one year. This visa is only valid for foreigners travelling as a student, visitor, employee, temporary employee, or spouse of a French national. Neither one’s status as a scientist or that of a scientist’s spouse is included for the time being. The long-stay visa (type D) for persons with scientist of scientist's spouse is valid for three months: make sure no mistake has been made when it is issued. The type of visa defines your entitlements and administrative procedures.

Resident permit

If your stay in France exceeds three months, you must apply for a resident permit within two months after your arrival. The application must be submitted to the “Research Correspondent” in your research organisation for Paris or, failing which, the Prefecture of your place of residence.
