The rules governing visas and resident permits vary depending on your country of origin. Find out about the procedure that concerns you depending on your situation.
You do not need a visa or a resident permit to stay in France.
Your tertiary qualification equivalent to at least five years’ post-secondary education has been validated in France
In this case, the transitory period does not apply to you so you can enter, live and work in France without necessarily having to apply for any authorisation.
Your tertiary qualification equivalent to at least five years’ post-secondary education was not awarded in France
In this case, like all European nationals, you may enter France without a visa providing you meet sufficient conditions to cover your stay (resources, health coverage, etc.) that can be easily met by presenting an employment contract or a scholarship certificate.
You will be employed in France
In this case, it is preferable that your future employer apply for a work permit on your behalf prior to your arrival. The application for this permit must be submitted by your host laboratory prior to your arrival to the relevant Direction Départementale du Travail, de l’Emploi et de la Formation Professionnelle (DDTEFP) (Local Department of Labour, Employment and Vocational Training). This procedure takes around one month and is essential for ensuring a smooth start to your research activity and payment of your salary.
If your laboratory has failed to request a work permit, submit an application for a work permit to the DDETFP of your place of residence.
After arriving in France, you must apply for a resident permit within two months of your arrival. You can only apply for a resident permit once the work permit has been issued.
Convention d’accueil
You must apply for a Convention d’accueil from your host research institute in France. This official document is issued by the Préfecture to research organisations. It must be signed by the authorised person in your research laboratory. It will enable you to obtain a visa scientifique (scientific visa).
