Health cover is essential for any stay in France. It will depend on your situation.
Insuring yourself
French Social Security provides all employees with cover for health expenses arising from illness or an accident, in the workplace or not. These services are mainly funded through mandatory contributions by the employee and his or her employer.
If you are an employee in France, you will necessarily be affiliated to a Social Security fund that may be general or special. You must join a fund by requesting registration. The most common fund is the general fund. To join this fund, you must contact the Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie (CPAM) (Local Health Insurance Fund) in your place of residence.
Reimbursement of medical costs is subject to a minimum level of contribution paid over a given period. Joining a new fund may enable you to avoid this initial three-month waiting period for coverage to take effect.
To join, ask your employer which fund you have to contribute to. Your employer’s human resources department should be able to advise you about any special fund.
If you belong to the general fund, you can contact us at bace@ciup.fr, we will let you know how to register to the CPAM.
Insuring your family
When you join Social Security, you can ask that your dependants (that is, the people living under the same roof as you and financially dependent on you: spouse, partner, descendants, ascendants, etc.) be included in your coverage. Contact us to know how to do this.
If you are not employed in France and you have Social Security coverage in a European Union country, you must apply for:
- A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), before arriving in France if your stay is temporary and you are then returning to your country,
- Form (E104) to transfer membership if you are permanently changing your place of residence or if you do not know in which country you will be residing after your stay in France. This will ensure you have Social Security coverage for standard treatment during your stay.
For more details, contact bace@ciup.fr
If you are not employed in France and you have Social Security coverage in a State that has signed a reciprocity agreement with France for sickness and maternity coverage, you will have Social Security coverage in France. You simply have to request a form stamped by the processing centre in your country of origin.
To check which countries have signed a social security agreement with France, consult the table compiled by CLEISS: http://www.cleiss.fr/docs/textes/index.html
And the Carte européenne et conventions bilatérales (European map of bilateral agreements)
If you are neither employed in France, nor hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), nor benefit from a reciprocity agreement, you must take out private health coverage for at least the first three months of your stay.
