“Here I am, packing my bags to leave, and I feel nostalgic about this place already … I can’t begin to describe it. When I came to Bréhat, I promised my friends who haven’t been lucky enough to visit yet that I would tell them everything about my journey. I brought a camera so I could share the beautiful landscape, the varied vegetation, the sunrises and sunsets over the water. Once I got to the island, I realised that photos would never tell the whole story; I would need a video camera to record the morning breeze, the sound of the waves against the rocks, the birdsong mingling with lowing cows. But no, even watching a film wouldn’t let them smell the country with the heady scent of flowers! How could I ever share this other world with them, its glass-blowing workshops, where you can get lost as you contemplate the perfect jewels as they are being made? How can you understand the friendly welcome and the warmth of the locals, the enthusiasm and the joie de vivre at the lively gatherings on Wednesday evenings in the village hall in Bourg, where they’ll gladly show you how to dance traditional Breton dances? I’ve had to face the truth: you can’t tell someone about Bréhat, they have to experience it for themselves. Many thanks to the Haraucourts for providing these happy moments and an unforgettable trip.”
