THE DUTCH COLLEGE

PERSONAL ACCOUNTS

These personal accounts make it clear how important renovating the College is to its residents. This is why the call for donations is so important.

“The College is bathed in light and the white walls reflect its splendour. The reflecting pool is also pleasant. But there are too many bars on the windows… Inside, the furniture in the rooms is certainly chic, but it’s not always practical; the spacing on the shelves comes to mind – they’re too tall for paperbacks and too short for larger books, which is unfortunate. A spot more storage would certainly be welcome, and showers in the rooms would be good. However, the kitchens should remain communal areas so that people don’t end up spending all their time alone in their rooms, that would really be a shame!”
Samuel, former resident 2002 to 2005

“The Dutch building had a reputation for being a serious building. But we still found time to sit down and chat whenever you met people in the hallway. With the courtyard garden even the hallways were bright and open. Coming from a sunny country, that was really important for me. The building is a beautiful representation of the pure lines of modern architecture. It will always remain so.”
Farah Diba, former Empress of Iran, resident of the Dutch College from 1957 to 1959

“This building was constructed in the industrial spirit of the 1930s. Time has not been kind to it, and now it looks like rundown hangar! Inside, everything works, but it’s a bare minimum… The great hall, the lobby and the reflecting pool really need to be refurbished and cleaned up. The lobby is where people create their first impression about the place, and it’s also the communal spaces for residents!”

Cristina, former resident, 2002 to 2005
